Hand-drawn Apperception Test

A compact modified version of the Thematic Apperception Test, developed by the Soviet psychologist Lyudmila Nikolaevna Sobchik in the 1970s, a practical guide has been published in the author’s books since the early 1990s.
The stimulus material is represented by 8 drawings, which depict 2-3 people in a conventional manner. Neither gender, nor age, nor social status, nor the time of action follows from the picture. At the same time, it can be assumed that each of the pictures depicts a situation, most likely a conflict, and at least two characters are involved in complex interpersonal relationships. It is necessary to compose a short story for each picture, which will reflect the following aspects: 1) what is happening at the moment; 2) who these people are; 3) what they think about and what they feel; 4) what led to this situation and how it will end.
The content of the stories makes it possible to identify the identification of the subject with one of the “heroes” of the plot and the projection of his own experiences. The analysis of the data obtained is carried out mainly at the qualitative level, as well as with the help of simple quantitative comparisons that allow you to assess the balance between the emotional and intellectual spheres, the presence of external and internal conflict, the sphere of disturbed relationships, the position of the individual – active or passive, aggressive or suffering, etc.
