Ganser syndrome

A rare dissociative disorder characterized by providing approximate answers to simple questions, often referred to as “prisoner’s pseudodementia.” People with this condition give answers that are meaningless or incorrect, as if intentionally, but without an obvious desire to deceive. The syndrome is often associated with extreme psychological stress, trauma, or organic brain damage, and is common in people in institutional settings such as prisons or psychiatric hospitals. It can also be associated with conversion disorder, in which psychological stress is converted into physical symptoms. Treatment usually includes work with underlying psychological disorders and psychotherapy.
