Flapping tremor, or asterixis,
involuntary, short-term, non-rhythmic movement, in which the hands seem to “wave” or fall with outstretched arms and dorsiflexion of the wrists. It is most commonly seen in metabolic encephalopathies, especially hepatic encephalopathy, but it also occurs in uremia, respiratory failure, and other conditions that cause global brain dysfunction. It is believed that tremor occurs due to a short-term loss of muscle tone due to impaired central control of movements. Treatment is aimed at eliminating the underlying cause.
