Astasia-abasia

A condition in which a person is unable to stand or walk in a coordinated manner despite normal leg strength and motor function preserved. The term “astasia” refers to the inability to maintain an upright position, and “abasia” refers to the inability to walk. The condition is often seen in functional (conversion) disorders, but can also occur in neurological diseases affecting gait and balance. Patients with astasia-abasia may show bright, uncoordinated movements when trying to walk, but still move their legs normally when sitting or lying down.
