Aaron Antonovsky’s Concept of Mental Health

understanding mental health as a dynamic and complex process related to a person’s ability to adapt effectively to life’s stresses and everyday difficulties, rather than simply the absence of mental illness or disorder. In his theory of “sense of coherence,” Antonovsky introduced a new perspective that mental health is defined by a person’s ability to perceive their environment, understand life events, use available resources, and find meaning and value in their experiences, allowing them to cope without mental or physical exhaustion. According to Antonovsky, mental health is not a static state, but a continuous process influenced by biological, social and psychological factors. It is a major determinant of a person’s ability to prevent both physical and mental illness. Therefore, promoting mental health means strengthening a sense of coherence, developing effective coping skills, and empowering a person to find personal meaning in their life, which in turn affects their quality of life, psychological stability, and resilience to crises and health problems.
