Akinetic mutism

a disorder characterized by a complete absence of movement and speech while maintaining consciousness. Patients with akinetic mutism may be in a state of complete inactivity, unresponsive to external stimuli, and inactive, but at the same time they retain the ability to perceive information and be aware of their surroundings. Akinetic mutism is often seen after severe traumatic brain injuries, strokes, or neurodegenerative diseases. Patients may exhibit minimal or no movement, although in some cases they may respond to simple requests or perform movements if stimulated.
