A rare neurological disorder in which the patient loses the ability to perceive movement. People with Akinetopsia see the world as a series of still images, despite the fact that objects and people can move. As a result, they cannot perceive the smoothness and dynamics of movement, which impairs their ability to adequately navigate in space and interact with the environment. Akinetopsia is associated with damage to certain areas of the brain, especially the posterior part of the temporal lobe (including V5/MT – the area responsible for perceiving movement). Patients with Akinetopsia may describe the world as static, while they can see individual objects but cannot perceive their movement.
