A perceptual disorder in which a sensation caused by a stimulus is perceived as coming from a different area of the body where the stimulus was actually applied. For example, a person may feel that touching one part of the body is happening in another, or perceive pain in a different part of the body than where the injury actually occurred. Allesthesia can be caused by damage to sensory areas of the brain, such as the somatosensory cortex, and can be seen in a variety of neurological disorders, such as stroke, brain injuries, or certain mental disorders.
