The phenomenon resembles allesthesia, but differs in that the sensation is not transferred to an arbitrary place, but, as a rule, to the opposite side of the body. Allochiria can occur when sensory pathways in the brain are affected, such as after a stroke or brain injury, when there is a disruption in the normal processing of sensory information. Patients may, for example, feel a touch on one hand, but perceive it as happening on the other.
