A condition in which normal, non-painful stimuli cause pain. For example, a light touch to the skin or pressure on a certain area of the body may be perceived as pain, although these stimuli usually do not cause pain. Allodynia can be caused by damage to the nerve pathways that transmit pain signals or by hypersensitivity of the nervous system. The disorder is often found in chronic pain, such as migraines, fibromyalgia, postherpetic neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy, and other neurological diseases.
