Allostasis

A concept in biology and psychology that means the ability of an organism or system to achieve stability and equilibrium not by maintaining constancy unchanged (as in homeostasis), but through active change and adaptation to external and internal conditions. The body anticipates possible changes and adapts in advance to keep functioning at an optimal level. This process includes the coordination of not only physiological reactions, but also behavioral strategies aimed at successfully overcoming stressful situations.
