Allostatic Load or the Cost of Adaptation
cumulative physiological exhaustion of the body, which occurs as a result of chronic or repetitive stress, when the adaptive mechanisms (allostasis) of the body cease to cope with the load. A high level of allostatic load over time leads to poor health, reduced adaptive capacity and an increased risk of developing diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, immune disorders, metabolic disorders and depression.
