Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

also known as motor neuron disease (MND) or, in the United States, Lou Gehrig’s disease (BLH), is a rare, end-ending neurodegenerative disease that results in the progressive loss of both the upper and lower motor neurons that normally control voluntary muscle contraction. ALS is the most common form of a broader group of motor neuron diseases. ALS often manifests itself in the early stages with gradual muscle stiffness, twitching, weakness, and exhaustion. The loss of motor neurons usually continues until the ability to eat, speak, move, and finally breathe is lost.
