Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

A progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor neurons of the brain and spinal cord. In ALS, there is a gradual death of motor neurons, which leads to muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, spasticity and impaired motor functions.
The main symptoms include muscle weakness, loss of control of movement, difficulty talking, swallowing and breathing. The disease progresses, and over time can lead to a complete loss of motor activity while maintaining cognitive functions.
The causes of ALS are not fully understood, and there is no effective treatment to stop the disease. Therapy is aimed at slowing the progression and relieving symptoms.
