Anesthesia in the area of gloves and stockings
A type of sensory loss that affects the distal parts of the extremities, usually starting with the fingers (gloves) and toes (stockings), gradually spreading up the arms and legs. This type of anesthesia is common in peripheral neuropathy, especially in conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, alcohol-related neuropathy, and certain vitamin deficiencies (such as B12). The condition is characterized by loss of sensation, numbness or tingling in the affected areas, and may also be accompanied by muscle weakness or balance problems. Distributing the loss of sensation according to the “gloves and stockings” type helps doctors localize the problem in the peripheral nervous system.
