Complete loss of the ability to produce sounds, often due to damage or dysfunction of the vocal cords, larynx, or neural pathways that control speech production. Unlike dysphonia, in which the voice becomes hoarse or weakened, in aphonia, the voice is completely absent. The causes can be physical trauma, infections, psychological stress, or neurological disorders such as damage to the vagus nerve or brainstem.
