Archman’s coping strategies

A set of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral techniques and mechanisms that people use to confront stressful situations and adapt to life’s challenges. Stress is understood not just as external stressful events, but as a subjective experience intertwined with personal evaluations and meanings that a person attaches to this event. Archman emphasizes that the coping process is not just an immediate reaction, but a continuous, dynamic process that includes evaluating, reevaluating, and adjusting responses to reflect the changing situation. Archman’s coping strategies are based on two main axes: the first is problem-oriented coping, in which a person seeks to deal directly with stress by analyzing it, identifying its causes, and finding practical solutions or alternatives that reduce or eliminate its severity. The second strand is emotion-focused coping, where a person focuses on regulating their emotional responses to stress, for example, by using cognitive reappraisal strategies, seeking social support, or engaging in activities that help reduce anxiety and tension. Archiman also emphasizes that coping is influenced by a number of factors, such as personal characteristics (psychological flexibility and resilience), available resources (social, material, and cognitive), and the nature of the stressful situation itself in terms of its intensity, duration, and manageability. He also argues that the effectiveness of coping is not absolute, but depends on the correspondence of the chosen strategy to the nature of the situation. Problem-oriented coping is more effective when the stressor is controlled, while emotion-oriented coping is more effective in unchanging situations. On a practical level, Archiman’s strategies have contributed to understanding how different coping styles affect mental and physical health. Studies have shown that the balanced and flexible use of strategies reduces anxiety and depression, increases resilience to psychosomatic disorders, and improves feelings of psychological well-being.
