Athetosis

A type of dyskinesia characterized by continuous, slow, tortuous, and involuntary movements, especially in the arms, legs, and face. These movements are often twisted or serpentine in nature and can become more pronounced when performing purposeful actions. Athetosis occurs due to damage to the basal ganglia, a group of brain structures responsible for the regulation of voluntary movements. It is often seen in conditions such as cerebral palsy, Huntington’s disease, and stroke.
