A type of memory impairment in which a person has difficulty reproducing central, contextual, or autobiographical information necessary to understand their personal identity and experiences. This type of amnesia predominantly affects memories related to time, place, and self, while more specific or isolated memories may remain preserved. It is often associated with damage to the hippocampus or other structures involved in memory consolidation and autobiographical encoding, which is typical of conditions such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), dementia, or certain types of amnestic syndromes.
