A lateral branch of a nerve fiber that branches off from the main axon and takes part in transmitting a signal to another neuron or group of neurons. Axonal collaterals contribute to the creation of complex circuits of interneuronal communication, increase the diversity of neural circuits, and increase brain plasticity. Their presence allows one neuron to connect to several others, strengthening communication between different brain regions and improving the overall organization of functional neural networks.
