Binswanger’s disease, also known as subcortical vascular dementia
is a rare form of dementia characterized by damage to the white matter of the brain, mainly due to chronic ischemia (decreased blood flow). Binswanger’s disease is accompanied by memory disorders, deficits in executive functions, motor difficulties and mood disorders. It mainly affects subcortical areas of the brain, including periventricular white matter, which can lead to changes in thinking, behavior, and coordination. Treatment is aimed at controlling comorbidities, such as hypertension, and preventing further vascular damage. The symptoms of the disease progress slowly and can be relieved with cognitive therapy and medication.
