A neurological condition characterized by involuntary, repetitive contractions or spasms of the eyelid muscles, often resulting in excessive blinking or even an inability to keep the eyelids open, a form of focal dystonia, a disorder involving abnormal muscle contractions. The exact cause of blepharospasm is not clear, but it is often associated with degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, eye irritation, or stress. In more severe cases, blepharospasm can lead to functional blindness, as the spasms make it difficult for the eyes to open for a long time. Treatment includes botulinum toxin (Botox) injections, which help temporarily paralyze the eyelid muscles, as well as medications aimed at reducing muscle contractions. In some cases, surgery may be required if the condition is severe and cannot be treated with other methods.
