Briquette hysteria, also known as hysteria or somatization disorder,

A psychological state characterized by physical symptoms that cannot be explained by medical or neurological diseases. It involves numerous, recurring complaints of a physical condition, such as pain, paralysis, or digestive problems, without a clear medical cause. The term Briquette syndrome was introduced in the second half of the 19th century by the French physician Pierre Briquet. He described the condition as a set of symptoms, including conversion symptoms, exaggerated emotional reactions, and a history of repeatedly going to doctors with multiple complaints. Although the symptoms are real and distressing, they are often thought to be the result of psychological factors, especially stress or unresolved emotional problems. Treatment usually involves a combination of psychotherapy, specifically cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and medication to manage symptoms and address possible underlying mental illnesses, such as anxiety or depression.
