Broken Plate Syndrome
The behavior is common in people with cognitive disorders such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or autism spectrum disorders, but can also be seen in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or neuropsychological illnesses. Repetitive statements or requests may be associated with memory problems, difficulty absorbing new information, or anxiety. In some cases, a person is unable to adjust their message or does not realize that they have already voiced it, which can lead to frustration or misunderstandings. Treatment for broken plate syndrome usually includes behavioral therapy, patient education, and strategies to help the person manage anxiety or cognitive deficits.
