California Card Sorting Test (CCST)
a neuropsychological assessment designed to measure a person’s executive functions, especially their ability to switch between cognitive attitudes, solve problems, and adapt to new rules. During the test, participants are asked to sort a set of cards according to various characteristics, such as color, shape or number. Initially, the sorting rule is not explained, and participants must discover it through trial and error. After a few correct answers, the rule changes, and participants must adjust their sorting strategy. The test assesses cognitive flexibility, inhibition, and attitude-changing abilities, which are important for performing tasks that require adaptation to changing situations. CCST is often used to evaluate people with damage to the frontal lobes of the brain, schizophrenia, dementia, and other cognitive disorders. The test is useful for assessing a person’s ability to change thoughts and behaviors when faced with new or unexpected challenges.
