Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

An integrative psychotherapeutic approach that focuses on changing unrealistic or negative thoughts and beliefs that influence emotions and behavior, with an emphasis on the interaction between cognition, behavior, and physiological outcomes. This model is based on the basic assumption that undesirable behaviors or negative emotions are not simply automatic reactions to situations, but the result of erroneous interpretations or ineffective thought patterns, and that changing these interpretations and thought patterns leads to a change in the emotions and behaviors associated with them. CBT in this model relies on a comprehensive assessment of the personality, covering cognitive (thoughts and beliefs), emotional (feelings and related emotions), behavioral (behavior patterns and operational reactions), and physiological (the body’s responses to stress and emotions) aspects. Cognitive techniques are used to identify and analyze irrational thoughts and replace them with more realistic and rational ones. Behavioral techniques such as gradual exposure, problem-solving skills training, and relaxation techniques are also used to change unwanted behaviors and encourage positive reactions in daily life. According to Mitchum, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is time-limited and goal-oriented, with an emphasis on implementing cognitive and behavioral changes through realistic experiences and structured learning both during and outside of therapy sessions. This therapy has been successfully applied to treat a wide range of psychological disorders, such as anxiety, depression, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, psychosomatic disorders, and conduct disorders, while enhancing a person’s ability to effectively cope with psychological and social stressors. By combining cognitive changes with behavioral modifications, therapy aims to achieve lasting improvements in mental and physical health and quality of life by allowing the individual to independently manage their thoughts and behaviors after sessions.
