Common paresis, also known as insane paralysis or neurosyphilis,
severe neuropsychiatric illness caused by advanced syphilis, especially in untreated Treponema pallidum infection. It is characterized by a combination of psychiatric symptoms, such as delusions, hallucinations, and personality changes, as well as neurological disorders, including muscle weakness, coordination problems, and cognitive decline. General paresis occurs when a syphilitic infection spreads to the central nervous system, often many years after the initial infection. Today, the disease is rare due to the availability of antibiotics to treat syphilis, but it used to be one of the leading causes of dementia and mental illness. Treatment includes antibiotics, usually penicillin, to control infection and stop progression.
