Complex Language and Communication Disorders
conditions in which the child has a pronounced deficit in the adequate use and expression of language, whether it is the expression of abstract or symbolic ideas or the understanding of linguistic and social symbols. These disorders include difficulty with verbal and nonverbal expression, understanding language correctly, using words correctly, and difficulty communicating socially. This syndrome is often associated with delayed development of the neural structures responsible for language ability, such as brain regions associated with language comprehension and speech activity, and can be exacerbated by a lack of early language stimulation or insufficient social interaction. These disorders directly affect the ability to learn, socialize, and participate in group activities and require specialized treatment programs that focus on language, social skills, and the ability to express symbols.
