Criticism of geographical determinism
those provisions that reveal the nuances of this concept:
1) Downplaying the role of a person – the assumption that people simply depend on the environment, which is wrong; People are able to adapt to it and change it.
2) Ignoring socio-cultural factors – values, politics, education and technology that affect human life are not taken into account.
3) Negative historical use – sometimes used to justify racial discrimination or colonialism, arguing that some peoples are “incapable” of progress because of their environment.
Geographic determinism allows us to understand how the natural environment affects living conditions, health, behavior, and the economy. Today, it is used in moderation in ecological and social models to understand human interaction with the environment, while recognizing the role of human will and technology.
