DIR / Floortime

Literally, “time on the floor” is an early intervention technique, one of the components of a comprehensive early intervention program based on the concept of DIR (Developmental Individual-difference Relationship-based model). A distinctive feature is the creation of a foundation for healthy development, thanks to which children master key abilities that are absent or impaired in the process of their development: the ability to warm, stable relationships with others, purposeful and full-fledged communication and, to varying degrees, logical, creative and abstract thinking. The idea of therapy is that the therapy should be natural, and the environment should be warm and safe for the child, based on play, correlated with the stage of the child’s socio-emotional development that is available to him. The game is led by the child, and adults join him. Parents only help to expand the play framework and instill new skills, while parents are assigned a crucial role in the therapy of the child. The purpose of the DIR concept is to create an assistance program that takes into account the level of development of the child, his individual characteristics of perception, motor skills, emotional sphere and cognitive functions, his strengths and weaknesses, the characteristics of the family and relationships in it. It is based on the stages of child development described by S. Greenspan. The goal of the Floortime method is to form emotionally significant interaction in play, life, and learning activities that contribute to development. It is used in early care for children with various disorders: ASD, ADHD, with behavioral difficulties, with difficulties in adaptation and socialization.
