Distribution of responsibility
A condition in which a person’s sense of responsibility decreases when they are in a group or a large crowd. Each member of the group becomes part of the common responsibility, which reduces his sense of personal responsibility for the consequences of his actions. As a result, people may behave irresponsibly or impulsively, such as vandalizing or engaging in acts of mass violence, as they believe that the blame or punishment will be shared among the rest of the group. This concept partly explains why unusual behavior is observed in a crowd, as individual responsibility becomes less obvious and the likelihood of engaging in collective behavior, whether negative or positive, increases. From a psychological point of view, the dispersion of responsibility demonstrates how group interaction can weaken an individual’s internal control and stimulate engagement in collective actions that are not rationally thought-out.
