The psychological and social process of increasing a person’s subjective sense of control, self-efficacy, autonomy, and worth, allowing them to actively influence their life and environment. In the context of mental health, empowerment means restoring self-esteem, the ability to make decisions about one’s treatment and to participate in society on an equal footing. Empowerment is the opposite of helplessness and promotes resilience, personal growth, and recovery from mental difficulties.
