Accumulation of blood between the inner surface of the skull and the outer layer of the dura mater, usually due to traumatic brain injury with rupture of an artery, often the middle meningeal. Symptoms can progress rapidly and include severe headache, vomiting, confusion, weakness, and loss of consciousness, sometimes after a “light gap” emergency that requires urgent surgery to reduce pressure on the brain.
