Episodic Discontrol Syndrome
A behavioral disorder in which there are sudden, disproportionate outbursts of anger, aggression, or violence, often with minimal or no provocation. Such episodes are usually short-lived, may be followed by regret or remorse, and are not explained by substance use, psychosis, or other underlying psychiatric illnesses. It is believed that the syndrome is associated with disruption of the parts of the brain responsible for controlling impulses, including the frontal lobes and limbic system, and can occur after traumatic brain injuries, neurological diseases or developmental features. Treatment includes behavioral therapy, anger management training, and, if necessary, medication support.
