Erethism

neuropsychiatric syndrome, most often occurring in chronic mercury poisoning, manifested by increased irritability, shyness, mood swings, self-doubt, depression and sometimes memory disorders. Physical manifestations are possible, including tremors and difficulty speaking. Historically, it was common in hatters exposed to mercury nitrate vapor (“mad hatter’s disease”). Treatment consists of eliminating contact with mercury and treating neurological and psychiatric symptoms.
