Extended Disability Rating Scale (EDSS)

A method for quantifying the degree of disability in patients with multiple sclerosis and tracking its changes over time. The scale range is from 0 (normal neurological condition) to 10 (death due to MS) in half-point increments, the assessment is based on a neurological examination and scores for functional systems, including pyramidal, cerebellar, stem, sensory, bowel and bladder functions, visual, cerebral and others. EDSS is widely used in clinical research and practice, although it is more sensitive to changes in mobility than to cognitive or upper extremity impairments.
