Formation of concepts

A higher-order cognitive process through which students achieve an abstract and organized understanding of a particular class of objects or phenomena that share common characteristics or properties. This process begins with the individual’s interaction with the environment, observing the similarities and differences between objects, eventually forming an overall concept that encompasses these common elements. In an educational context, concept formation is one of the foundations on which scientific thinking depends, as it enables students to classify information, apply it to new situations, and solve problems, also a necessary step in building additional knowledge, where concepts accumulate to form subsequent principles and theories. The formation of concepts requires the provision of rich opportunities for experimentation, comparison, observation and dialogue, which reflects the importance of the role of the teacher in the development of stimulating learning activities.
