Free and Prompted Selective Reproduction Test (FCSRT)

a neuropsychological technique for assessing verbal memory, in particular the ability to encode, store and retrieve information with and without prompts. During the test, the subject is presented with a list of words associated with categorical clues (for example, “fruit – apple”) and asked to reproduce them freely. Words that are not named spontaneously are then suggested using categorical prompts. FCSRT helps distinguish between retrieval disorders (improvement with prompts) and storage disorders (poor playback even with prompts), making it useful for the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
