Functional Assessment Scale (FAM)

An extension of the Functional Independence Scale (FIM) designed to more fully assess the degree of disability, especially in patients with brain damage. It includes a baseline 18 FIM items and complements them with 12 items assessing cognitive, behavioral, communicative, and community integration skills, such as emotional state, reading, writing, safety assessment, and work ability. FAM can identify functional limitations that may not be reflected in FIM and is therefore particularly valuable in neurorehabilitation for treatment planning, goal setting, and progress tracking.
