Global Neural Workspace Theory

A cognitive-neuroscientific model of consciousness that explains how information becomes accessible to awareness through the activation of a wide network of neurons in the brain. According to the GNWT, conscious perception occurs when information “travels” beyond local specialized areas and propagates through a global neural network, allowing different cognitive systems to interact and integrate data. This theory emphasizes the role of the frontal-parietal regions of the brain in providing the workspace necessary for conscious thinking, attention, and voluntary control of behavior.
