Higher (secondary) defense mechanisms

a concept developed in psychoanalysis; reflect global, regular, healthy adaptive ways of experiencing the world. They differ in that they are directed to the internal structures of the Self (Ego, Super-Ego and Id, or between the observing and experiencing parts of the Ego). As a rule, they transform any one sphere of mental reality (thoughts, feelings, sensations or behavior). Repression, intellectualization, rationalization, moralization, sublimation, and so on can be attributed to the extravagant consciousness.
