(from the Greek hypnos – sleep):
1) one of the altered states of consciousness characterized by immobility/stupor and narrowing of the volume of consciousness, while the person remains awake;
2) a psychotherapeutic technique of using this phenomenon (for example, Ericksonian hypnosis).
The term was first introduced by the English surgeon J. Braid in 1843.
