Identity crisis in adolescents
is a key concept in Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development. It usually occurs in adolescence, when a person experiences an internal struggle, asking questions: “Who am I?”, “What do I believe?” and “What is my role in society?”. In the educational context, this crisis presents a serious challenge, as adolescents need a supportive environment to help them explore their identity – personal, social or professional – through opportunities for participation, self-expression and engagement in meaningful activities. Failure to cope with this crisis can lead to a loss of identity or the formation of unhealthy patterns of behavior, while successfully overcoming this crisis forms a harmonious and stable personality in students.
