A cognitive bias exaggerated by a close relationship between variables that either does not exist in reality or is much smaller than expected. A typical example is the attribution of negative qualities to an ethnic minority group. Illusory correlation is considered one of the ways to form stereotypes. The phenomenon of illusory correlation is most often observed when the events are unusual, noticeable and striking.
