Lateral inhibition

a neurophysiological mechanism that consists in a decrease in the activity of neighboring neurons with an increase in the activity of the central neuron. This creates a clear contour of the perceived stimulus, improves the quality of visual perception and reduces the level of noise in signals. A similar mechanism is present in many brain systems, such as the visual and tactile systems, and is considered a prerequisite for high-quality information processing.
