Manipulation

a method of social influence aimed at eliciting in the target of manipulation certain motivational states and feelings and activating certain behavioral attitudes. Influence in this case is carried out in the interests of the manipulator. At the same time, it is important to note that manipulation does not necessarily harm the target of influence. R. Cialdini identifies a number of typical situations in which manipulation occurs. These include requests for help or a service, the impact of advertising on consumers, political propaganda, childrearing, and so on. In the view of E. Shostrom, manipulation is a widespread phenomenon. Practically any person, to one degree or another, is a manipulator, since they constantly try to influence others, while themselves falling into the nets of their own and others’ manipulations.
