Metacognition
awareness of one’s own thought processes and understanding of the patterns underlying them. Metacognition also involves thinking about one’s own thought process, such as learning skills, memory capabilities, and the ability to control learning. Metacognition includes two interrelated phenomena: metacognitive knowledge (metacognitive awareness – what people know about themselves and others, such as beliefs about their own thinking) and metacognitive experience (experiences related to the current cognitive process).
