Neurodevelopmental disorders
a group of developmental disorders that affect the cognitive, motor and emotional functions of the child. They cover a wide range of difficulties that arise in early development and sometimes persist into adolescence. These disorders focus on impaired or delayed acquisition of basic skills that a child is expected to develop at his or her chronological age, such as speech, reading, writing, attention, motor organization, and social skills. Neurodevelopmental disorders are considered in an integrated approach, in which genetic, environmental and social factors interact. Biological factors are responsible for some underlying abnormalities in brain structure, while environment, education, and interactive experiences alter or compensate for performance. Thus, these disorders are not just a fixed deficit, but rather a dynamic process that can be diagnosed at an early stage and corrected with corrective and therapeutic interventions to minimize their impact on the child’s academic and social development.
