A phenomenon that is the release of an egg from the ovary into the fallopian tube as a result of the rupture of a mature follicle. The biological meaning of ovulation is the release of the egg from the follicle for its fertilization, conception and further passage through the genital tract. If fertilization does not occur, the egg dies in the fallopian tube within about 24 hours.
