Pace of neurodevelopment

The development of the brain and neural functions does not occur continuously and uniformly, but follows certain temporal patterns, which differ depending on the type of neural function: sensory, cognitive or executive. According to this concept, each higher mental function or cognitive skill arises and develops at a certain time, which allows the brain to maximize its capabilities during this period. Understanding these rates of development is essential to developing effective training and treatment strategies. From a neuropsychological perspective, working with pace-based understanding helps improve the interaction between different neural systems, improve the regulation of attention and behavior, and make the most of sensitive periods in development. Developing educational and therapeutic programs that accommodate this pace also allows for a better balance between stimulation and learning, as well as reducing stress and negative emotions, contributing to the child’s comprehensive and sustainable development.
